ABOUT US

Ennead (E nod), n: The Council of Nine; the governing body or city council in the majority of cities and towns in ancient Egypt. The council governed both the ecclesiastic and lay life of the citizens. The ancient Egyptians considered the number 3 and its multiples to be mystical.

The Grand Carnival Krewe of Ennead was founded in 1989 and patterned after the “secret” societies of the original Cotton Carnival, which became Carnival Memphis during the 1990s. Its by-laws require Ennead members to be over the age of 30 and legally not married. Its membership is kept in balance with an approximately equal number of men and women members.

By far, Ennead is the most active of the Carnival Krewes with at least one major party or event for members each month. Additionally, there are many small group activities within the krewe to appeal to the wide range of interests of our members, including cultural arts, antiques, bridge, spades, poker, wine parties, seasonal “potluck” dinners, golf and tennis. Monthly there are informal cocktail hour and dinner group gatherings and a birthday party. Our monthly general member parties usually include music and dancing. Event locations range from museums to country clubs as well as members’ homes.

Ennead provides a great conduit for members to interact with other singles at our events as well as members of other Krewes within Carnival Memphis. Hieroglyphics, our monthly newsletter, keeps members informed of coming events. It also lists the chairs and contact numbers for each of the committees/activities in the krewe. Volunteering to work on krewe committees and activities is an excellent way to broaden your acquaintanceships within the group. The Krewe’s website, The Grand Krewe of Ennead www.ennead.info, contains the newsletter as well as information for all events. Annual dues cover a member’s share of the costs for most parties, many of which include food and beverage.

Carnival Memphis, originally called Cotton Carnival, was established in 1931 but has roots dating back to Memphis in the late 1880s. Its original purpose was to promote and celebrate the cotton industry, a major local economic force in those days. A “Mardi Gras” style celebration developed and became a major annual local event. “Secret” societies were formed as social clubs to participate in the festivities and evolved into today’s Carnival Krewes. As cotton’s dominance as a local economic force waned, the event evolved into Carnival Memphis. Each year a different industry is honored for its contribution to the local economy and the Krewes all participate in fund raising for designated charities selected by Carnival Memphis. You may find participation in the fundraising efforts to be a personally fulfilling and rewarding experience.

Joining Ennead: If you would like to participate with a great group in a wide variety of fun and interesting activities, you must submit an application signed by a primary sponsor and two co-sponsors who have known you for a “significant” period of time. You must attend at least three major events as a guest of a member, as well, so that you may get a “taste” of the organization to decide if Ennead is “right” for you. For more information or to obtain an application, contact Ennead’s Chairman, Membership Chairman or New Member Committee Chairman (names are listed on Directors & Chairmen Page).
