chair's comments

Carnival Memphis officially closed its 2007 season on Saturday, June 9.  During this Carnival season, the Grand Krewes and Carnival headquarters raised more than $175,000 for the three children’s charities.  On behalf of the children, I thank everyone who worked to make this happen.

Ennead’s closing party was on Wednesday, June 6.  As always, our Clubroom was an awesome party.  Our Vice Chairman Carolyn Mayo coordinated all the many tasks that are required in such an undertaking.  Thank you, Carolyn, and to all those who worked on making Clubroom such a success.

 Uncle Charlie
Ennead Chairman

Our next big party is the Independence Day fireworks display.  Please remember – that this party is being held on Saturday, June 30th this year.  Do not go downtown on July 4th and expect to see the fireworks display.

Included in this Newsletter are the names of the people running for Ennead’s Board of Directors for the next two years.  That election will be held at our Annual Business Meeting on Saturday, August 11.

Unlike recent years, there are more than 6 ladies and 6 men on the Official Ballot.  The reason for that is very simple.  The Bylaws require that there be at least five women and five men on the Official Ballot.  The Bylaws do not place a cap on the number of candidates.  So, why did the Nominating Committee do it differently this year?

The Nominating Committee (NC) is unanimous in presenting ALL members who have stated that they are willing to step up and make a greater commitment to Ennead by serving on our Board of Directors.  The NC feels that it should be the entire membership’s responsibility to make the selections, and not the decision of a handful of Directors.  The NC felt that all candidates are quite qualified and will be an asset to the Board.  The final decision is in the hands of the membership, as it should be.  This country does not limit the number of candidates running for President, Senator, or whatever.  Ennead, like this country, is a democratic organization.

As always, the election of three women and three men to serve on our Board for the next two years is an important responsibility for the membership and should not be taken lightly.  The people who are elected will help lead Ennead to greater heights.  Please seriously consider each candidate and vote for the three women and three men who you believe are the most qualified.  Don’t vote for someone just because your buddy told you to.  Learn the candidates.

In the event any member knows in advance that (s)he cannot attend the Annual Business Meeting, that member must personally request from the Chairman a certified absentee Official Ballot.  The absentee Official Ballot must be completed and mailed by the requesting member to the Krewe’s official address which is Grand Krewe of Ennead, P O Box 172165, Memphis, TN  38187.  The certified absentee Official Ballot (no copies will be accepted) must be received by Wednesday, August 8.

Have a great July!

Nancy Cox

Nancy Cox

As a Board Member and Officer in the early days of ENNEAD, I uniquely bring the richness of history and experience to the 2007-2008 Ballot.

Since serving as a Board Member, I have been involved within our community in other capacities – as an East Memphis Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow; Leadership Memphis; Rhodes College Institute for Executive Leadership; MidSouth Workers’ Comp Claims Association – VP and Board Member. More recently, I was honored to serve as a Deacon at Hope Presbyterian Church.

Many of us- myself included, find ourselves in Memphis; without immediate family. We look to ENNEAD for support in vulnerable times.

My current circumstances bring me full circle to my community of friends in ENNEAD. By election time, I will know first hand what protocols and best practices constitute a continuum of care and support for ENNEAD members. As an elected Board Member, I will design and implement a program to ensure ENNEAD is there when your time of need arises.

Your vote of confidence is appreciated!

Dottie Crihfield

Dottie Crihfield

Dottie Crihfield became a member of Ennead in 1991.  She was a Duchess in 93 and served on the Board in 94 and 95. She was instrumental in helping to start some of the early small groups like Tennis, Bridge, and Games Night.  She believes that small groups are where you really get to know the members and form true friendships.  She was a ready participant in all of Ennead’s events until a few years ago when her business demanded more of her attention.

She is a retired R.N. who at midlife decided to make a career change.   She is the owner and active landscape designer of Lovely Lawns, a company that specializes in digital design, sprinklers, watergardens and nightscaping.

As she has become more active again, she believes that maintaining the high standards of the membership will allow Ennead to “party with a purpose”, as well as, contribute to the community in a valuable way.  She feels that with her experience, she will be an asset to its Board of Directors.

Robie Hoffman

Robie Hoffman

Robie Hoffman has more than twenty years experience as a registered representative, accountant and analyst with Vining Sparks.  The firm is an international broker/dealer offering underwriting, sales and trading of securities to institutional investors, as well as bond pricing and accounting.

She holds a Series 7 license.  Her banking career includes experience in operations, accounting, compliance and internal audit.  Responsibilities and areas of oversight include financial reporting, regulatory reporting and helping to develop software that today manages the accounts payable department.

Prior to joining Vining Sparks, Ms. Hoffman was sales manager for Doortex Iron and Steel Company with offices in La, Al. and Tx.  She also managed a drive inn theatre for Robinson Theatre Circuit while attending the University of Alabama.

During her tenure with our Grand Krewe, she has recently served as a board member (gladly filling the term of Dee Dee Hodovsky), was Chairman of 5-K Race for Kids and with utmost pride represented Ennead as Duchess with the theme Dancing with the Stars.

Civic involvements include Memphis in May, Brooks Museum, Decorative Arts Trust, Memphis Symphony and Carnival Memphis.  She has readily joined in the merriment of Carnival with enthusiasm and promises you integrity, commitment, loyalty and plain hard work.

Joyce Laws

Joyce Laws

I, Joyce Laws, would appreciate your consideration for the privilege of serving on the Ennead Board of Directors.  I have enjoyed my five-year membership and wish to contribute more to this worthwhile organization as a director.

I have owned Memphis Travel Designs for 25 years and have enjoyed traveling with many current and past Ennead members.  Additionally, I make time for professional, civic and charitable endeavors.

While living in Barcelona, Spain, I served as president of the American Women's Club of Barcelona.  I have been a city councilwoman, a past president of the Junior Auxiliary, and a member the City of Memphis Postal Committee.  Currently I am president of SKAL, an organization of international travel professionals, which like Ennead supports charitable causes.

As an Ennead Board member, I would bring the same enthusiasm and energy I have used to build my business to further our continued growth, and to support our worthy causes.  I know from my business experience that no one succeeds alone.  I intend to work closely with the Board and the membership to achieve our objectives.

It is with great pleasure that I offer my name for consideration as a member of the Board of Directors.  I have been a member of Ennead since September 2004 and have subscribed to our mission of “Partying with a Purpose”.  In both 2004 and 2005 I served as Co-Chairperson of our Krewe Fundraising initiative.  We were hugely successful in raising more dollars for our designated charities in the last three years than in years past as a direct result of my efforts to tap FedEx Express Corporate charity reserve dollars.  I currently serve on the Carnival Memphis Board of Directors, and have for the past ten years worked with Moriah House, a home for battered women and their children.  I have been a member of management at the largest transportation company in the world for the last 27 years.  FedEx Express has afforded me the opportunity to learn, grow, and both understand business operations and appropriate management of both human and financial resources.  I have traveled the globe.  I have made significant contributions to our global Air Operations business.  I am now ready to offer my services as one of your Board Members.  We have so much to offer our community and it is our responsibility to give something back.  My personal mission is to work toward the greater good of our Grand Krewe of Ennead and help us make our place among all Carnival Memphis Krewes as one that is hard-working, credible, and dignified.  I look forward to serving each of you in this capacity.

Mary Rea

I rejoined Ennead over two years ago.  When I rejoined it was with the personal commitment to myself that I would become more involved in the activities and events that Ennead offers its membership.    I am currently the Decorating Chairman and help in other areas as much as possible.  Rejoining Ennead was the best thing I could do.  I have met some of the most wonderful people in the world and have developed great friendships.

I am a home-grown Memphian and a Human Resource Manager for a manufacturing plant in Southaven, MS.   Throughout my life, I have been involved in many fundraising events for various organizations including United Way, Life-Blood and the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation.   I have always believed that everyone should give a little of themselves to help those less fortunate than themselves.

If elected as a member of the Board, I will diligently strive to help Ennead continue to be the NUMBER ONE KREWE in Carnival Memphis.  I would promote greater member involvement in Ennead and continue to support the Ennead Annual Fundraiser for Carnival Memphis Children’s Charities.

Thank you for the honor of running for the Board.

Betty Reschenberg

It is a privilege to finally accept the offer to be a candidate for the Board of Directors of Ennead. I have been a member of this organization since its conception but due to an unpredictable schedule while a flight attendant for Piedmont/US Air I could not accept when asked. However, there were many other opportunities and areas where I did contribute. I was the first coronation chairman and again two more times in later years. I have worked on the calling committee, registration desk, bartended, played tennis and poker, set up for parties, cleaned up after parties and found wonderful friends to last a lifetime along the way. For three years I served as the new member chairman. In 1999 it was my privilege to be a Duchess and in 2001 I had the honor of being the eleventh Queen of Ennead. This year I served as your Fund Raising Chairman.

Because of my long time affiliation with Cotton Carnival, now Carnival Memphis, I ask for your vote so that I may further Ennead’s reputation as the best Krewe in Carnival. If elected I will facilitate change if it is for the good of the entire organization, to listen to your concerns and suggestions and represent each of you to the best of my ability.

Pamela Smith

Pamela Smith

I have been a member of Ennead since January, 2000 and really enjoyed the friendships I’ve cultivated as well as the honor of being a part of the krewe that has done the most fundraising for our children’s charities.  It is a pleasure for me to run for the Board of Directors a second time.

While a member of Ennead I have served on the Board in 2004 as Treasurer and 2005 as Membership Chairman and also was a Duchess on the Court of 2005.  I am currently the liaison with Holiday Inn University of Memphis for setting up Coronation and Clubroom and have co-chaired both events in the past.  Also, I have participated in poker, spades, wine tastings, dinner group and the registration desk for parties.

Currently, I am a long time Board member of Special Kids and Families, Inc. and I have been associated with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Memphis Symphony League, American Cancer Society, Salvation Army Auxillary and participated in various fundraising efforts for each through the years.

I would appreciate your vote in August.

Thanks to the Ennead Nominating Committee for asking me to consider placing my name on the ballot as a nominee for the Board of Directors of Ennead.  Let me begin with a brief bio of myself.

As a native Memphian, I graduated from Bartlett High School in 1970, attended the University of Southern Mississippi for 1 year then obtained my undergraduate degree from the University of Memphis in 1974 and then completed my Masters Degree in 1976.

I worked for a large property management firm for a year then started my own company, Memphis Managers, specializing in condominium management, In my capacity as agent for several condominium and single family communities, I conduct monthly board meetings.  Thus understanding how Boards function is something I have been involved with over the years.

I have served on the Board of the YMCA, deacon at Hope Presbyterian Church, co-leader for the Hope Divorce Recovery Program, IREM (Institute of Real Estate Managers), and a foster mom for the MAGRR (Memphis Area Golden Retriever Rescue).

Thank you again for considering me for the Board of Directors for Ennead!

Nancy Williams

Who?  Me?  For a living, I am the surgery coordinator for the Plastic Surgery Group of Memphis.  For fulfillment, I am a former officer of the Assoc. for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities (APTA), past employee and docent of the Woodruff-Fontaine House.  Presently, I am a docent and character actor for Elmwood Cemetery and a member of the 19th Century Club and West Tennessee Historical Society.  Yes, historic preservation and local history are my loves – second only to my four children and three granddaughters…and of course, Ennead.

Looking to the future I have been an active member of Ennead for three years and have enjoyed every day of it.  So many new friends and so much fun from the wine tastings to the birthday parties to spontaneous gatherings at other social events.  I have worked the sign-in desk and clean up, handled publicity for our major events, participated in BTTS, and served on several committees. I believe that being on the Board of Directors is a serious responsibility, and shouldn’t be a popularity contest.  I have been involved, and I am not a “ghost” candidate emerging only at election time.  Our Krewe should be looking forward for new ideas, forward for new growth and members, and forward for a more inclusive Carnival experience.

Jim Browning

Jim Browning

An Ennead member since 1993, I have served on the Board of Directors and a Duke, chaired the Bar Committee for three years, headed the Dinner Group for eight years, and introduced many of our current and former members to our group.  I was King of another Carnival Memphis Krewe, now-defunct, for two years.

My business and experience qualifications include: Owning my own business for 23 years as a Real Estate Broker and Property Manager, currently serving as both President of my Heber Springs Homeowners Association and Vice President of my Memphis Homeowners Group, and three years as Chairman of Stars [an adult singles group serving volunteers to non-profits including most of those recognized by Carnival Memphis].

My main goal for Ennead will be to improve the quality, attendance, and enjoyment of our monthly parties, and to focus on expenditures and membership recruitment - without membership, nothing else continues to happen.

Your support is appreciated, and your concerns will be addressed.

Bob Laurie

First some information about me.  I'm single (duh!), have two children and four grandchildren.  I currently work in sales for FedEx and was a President's Club Award winner in 2006.  I have been a member of Ennead since February, 2006, and have been pleased to volunteer to assist at the two fundraisers and the coronation that have been held since I joined.  In past years, I have served on the vestry of my church and was president of the church men's club for three years.  And I am a volunteer at various events, of which the two best known at the Stanford St. Jude Tournament and Memphis In May, where I have been on the BBQ Judging Steering Committee for the last three years.

What I see as my main job as an Ennead Board member will be to work with the Board members and non-Board members alike to build on the success that Ennead has enjoyed for the past 18 years.  My experiences with the organizations I mentioned above have shown me the value of teamwork.  I know that unless a team is pulling together towards a common goal, it's going nowhere.  I personally believe that Ennead is the greatest of the Carnival Memphis krewes and that is due to the quality of the events we hold and the Ennead members, themselves.  As a member of the Ennead Board, I will work to make sure that Ennead will always be a krewe that we are proud to be members of.

Steven Morrow

I would like to nominate myself to run for the Board of Ennead.  I have been a member of Ennead for nearly 2 years.  In that time, I have made many new friends and enjoyed the fellowship of many of the members during our numerous parties and events.

I feel that the success and continuation of any organization is founded in strong leadership, keeping a vibrant, happy and involved membership base and the ability of the organization to attract and obtain new members.  New members bring new and fresh ideas, invigoration, and longevity to a group such as Ennead.

I was Born in Greensboro, NC and moved to Memphis, TN in 1964 when my family relocated to the city.  Attended school in Memphis, graduated high school from Christian Brothers High School, and obtained a degree in Marketing from Memphis State University.

As a successful Business Professional, Father, Son and nearly life long Memphian, I have a keen sense of the community of Memphis, strong ties to the business community as Premier Client Director for AT&T and many friends throughout the community.  I work hard and play hard.  I want to see Ennead prosper and continue to grow.  If elected to the Board of Ennead, the only promise I will make is to do my best to ensure that Ennead is represented in the best light possible, bring in some fun new ideas, and help grow the membership by attracting and nominating great candidates for the member’s consideration.

Bigelow Robinson

I, Bigelow Robinson, am announcing my candidacy for one of the Board of Director's position. I have been a member of our great krewe for 3 years. During this time I have worked on and donated to my favorite project, The Fundraiser, and have worked the check in table as well as being lucky enough to have King Bill Albans choose me to serve as last year's Flagman. What fun that was.

As a lot of you know because you have worked with me, I bring a lot of positive experience serving on various civic and conservation boards. Successfully chairing some of them. I would like to use these as a help in serving on our board. Therefore, I am asking for your vote and support in the stewardship of our great krewe.

Albert Santi

I’m Albert Santi and have been in the Mortgage Business for 39 years.   Santi Mortgage is now 10 years old.  I’ve written 9 books about the Mortgage business and all have been published; the Encyclopedia book has been with the Mortgage Bankers Association in D.C. for over 10 years and is still going strong.  In 1998 I moved into a Log Cabin Lodge in Fayette County and started a B&B and also began development of Hickory Withe Lakes Subdivision.  Santi Lodge was awarded “Best B&B in West Tennessee” by The Tennessee Magazine and placed # 3 in a National Survey of the Top 20 Best B&Bs in a “Country Setting” conducted by Arrington’s Bed & Breakfast Journal.  My activities are tennis and partying.  In 2005 with the help of Collierville Civitan I started the “Special Olympics Tennis Tournament” and we have raised thousands of dollars for that organization.  My only claim to fame is that every good party I’ve been to since High School, Jimmy Tual has seen me there.  I’ve been a member of Ennead for at least six years and if the Organization wants me on their Board, I will be happy to serve.

tidbits

As the Chairman of the 2007 Clubroom, I want to acknowledge and thank the Clubroom Planning Committee for all their hard work in making our June 6th party a great success. Marta Vinzant, with the assistance of Mary Rea, Tayloe Nickey and many workers on the day of the event, created an elegant and whimsical atmosphere. Donna Mikeal handled Registration, a big and important job coordinating the workers to expedite the check-in process for our members and guests. Nancy Williams handled our media coverage. Charlie Crumby, our intrepid Chairman, was a great emcee, keeping the program on track. Pam Smith coordinated all the details with the Holiday Inn.
Sara Qualls provided some great advice and direction. Kathy Jacobs coordinated the arrival of the Carnival Memphis Court and the Boll Weevils so that their arrival could be heralded in right on cue.
Jim Browning once again was our spotlight operator. Dave Everson negotiated the band contract. And last but not least, Queen Barbara gave the committee her input on the look and feel she wanted for the evening.
     I appreciate
everyone who contributed in any way to the success of the 2007 Ennead Clubroom. These events don't just happen. They take the time and dedication of many to go smoothly, and with the help and guidance of those mentioned above I believe Ennead had the best Clubroom of the 2007 Carnival Memphis season.
With love and heartfelt gratitude,  Carolyn Mayo

Neighborhood School Founder thanks Ennead…….
Dear Ennead,
Thanks to you dear folks, most of our students have gone to Christian summer camps and three of our students have gone with Teen Missions on two month mission trips.
Summer School is going strong and is followed each day with summer enrichment classes. We have broken ground for our two dormitories.  This is a dream that is at last becoming a reality. We are now in search of donated furnishings, such as appliances and furniture, as well as any building materials.
Carnival Memphis is making it possible for us to buy the curriculum we need for Best Friends, an outstanding abstinence program, as well as to buy Anger Management curriculum.  We are offering an excellent academic education, but these programs are essential if we expect our students to really benefit from their education.  So many of them come from such abusive situations.
As for volunteers, we need people to work in any of a variety of ways in our 12:30 to 3:00 program every day either tutoring, teaching something of interest to the volunteer or providing a swimming pool one or more times for our children to swim.  Gratefully, Jo Walt - 685-6230

Quote from Father Hubbard at Emmanuel Episcopal Center:  "It has been such an honor and a blessing to have been chosen by Carnival Memphis.  It has been a humbling experience for us to see how so many people in the Memphis community come together to assist the needs of children's charities.  Thank you for your generous support of our efforts to bring hope to the inner city youth of Memphis."

The Emmanuel Scholars Tour takes those students, ages 10-18, who maintain a 3.0 grade point average throughout the previous school year on a trip to different cities in the United States. The purpose of these tours is primarily to reward the students for outstanding academic achievement and to expose them to other environments other than inner city Memphis. Without exposure to different cultures, places, and people, it is hard for these inner city youth to make a change and elevate themselves out of poverty. Through the motivation of the Emmanuel Scholars Tour, the students are encouraged to excel academically and to pursue a higher education.  This year, thirty participants have qualified to attend the Tour.  Your gift will help us show the youth that there is more to the world than inner city Memphis and that with the right education and the right choices in life, it is possible to break the cycle of poverty.

Camp H.O.P.E. focuses on keeping children busy in the summertime, when crime rises in urban neighborhoods and children are often left with little or no direction.  Any support is greatly appreciated, and you can be rest assured that all gifts, large or small, will directly affect a child’s life in a positive way.
